Prostate cancer is the most commonly found cancer in American men. It is estimated that roughly one in six American men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer at some point in their lives. Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of death by cancer for men, second only to lung cancer. Generally, prostate cancer occurs in older men; it is rare to have prostate cancer before you are age 40.
Catch it Early
If it is properly treated, prostate cancer is a very survivable illness. It is crucial that you are aware of the symptoms so that you can start treatment early and increase your chances of survival. You should be looking for the following symptoms:
- Dull pain in the lower pelvic area
- Frequent urination
- Problems with urination, such as the inability, pain, burning, weakened urine flow
- Blood in the urine or semen
- Painful ejaculation
- General pain in the lower back, hips, or upper thighs
- Loss of appetite and/or weight
- Persistent bone pain
Prostate Screenings
In its early stages, prostate cancer can show no symptoms. This is why it is not only important for you to be aware of the symptoms but also to get regular screenings. The American Urological Association recommends that healthy men over the age of 40 should get a baseline prostate cancer screening with both a DRE and PSA test. Research has suggested this is the most effective way to catch prostate cancer early.
