Let’s be honest, when men hear about something being implanted into their penis, it doesn’t sound like a walk in the park. Most of us would agree. The problem arises from the amount of misinformation online concerning penile implants. Let’s unravel the myths and facts about penile implants.
Don’t Make Assumptions
When you can no longer have enjoyable sex, you begin to investigate ways to treat erectile dysfunction. Many men consider surgical correction a drastic step and just ignore any information about treatments. That is fine if you don’t care about having sex with your partner any longer. Maybe you think you’re too old. Maybe you think your partner doesn’t care. Don’t make assumptions about the surgery or how your partner feels. Life is too short not to have great sex.
Myth: If medications and injections didn’t work for me, a penile implant won’t either.
Not true. Studies show very high satisfaction rates among men and their partners ranging from 90 to 95%. Many men successfully use their implant for 15 to 20 years or longer without complications. There are three different types of implants and Texas Center for Urology will discuss which one(s) might be best for you.
Myth: Everyone will know I have an implant.
Unless you tell them, there is no way anyone can tell you have an implant, even your partner. It is undetectable from the outside since it is concealed within the penis..
Myth: I won’t enjoy sex anymore.
There are very high satisfaction rates among men and their partners. On the contrary, you will still be able to have an erection, an ejaculation, orgasm, and it will not change any stimulation.
Myth: My penis will look different.
Regardless which type of implant you choose, your penis will look the same both flaccid and erect.
Myth: The surgery and recovery will be too painful and lengthy.
Of course there is some pain and discomfort after any surgery, but it is managed with pain medication at first. Most men report the discomfort was less than they anticipated. Only one small incision is needed and most patients go home the same day or after spending one night in the hospital. Recovery takes 2 to 3 weeks and the incision heals within 5 days. Any swelling or discomfort is gone in the first week.
